Mentorship
Mentorship is a proven component of effective re-entry services. Almost any adult over 21 can be a mentor, even people with a criminal history themselves. In fact, many of our Sponsors alumni have become mentors. Our program will match a mentor with a Sponsors client who shares similar interests, such as fishing, hiking, schoolwork or recovery. The time commitment is small, but the rewards for mentors, clients and community are great.
The Mentorship Program matches recently incarcerated adults with mentors who will serve as a support person, confidant, resource, and friend who engages with their “mentee” in recreational activities, and guides them through the many barriers they face in re-entry. It is not designed to be a treatment or counseling program, but simply a way for mentees to build connections with people and their community. Mentorship is a proven best practice in re-entry services.
The goal of the program is to decrease rates of recidivism by encouraging clients to make positive life choices that will promote healthy lifestyles, community engagement, and positive recreational activities. These choices lead to personal growth and success. The Mentorship Program at Sponsors has frequent trainings for both mentors and mentees, and has monthly recreational trips and barbeques/potlucks.
